Rake n' Scrape. Soca. Reggae. Calypso. Reggaeton. Junkanoo. Goombay. Dance Hall.

CULTURAL PRIDE. For the record, the national pride put on display by West Indian and Caribbean people is absolutely breathtaking, and second to none. We wear our colors and flags with great honor and dignity. The music, food, costumes, and positive vibes will put anyone in a good mood. It's just as infectious as it is beautiful.

Although I love to travel, I am usually not a fan of large crowds. What can I say, I have both introvert and extrovert qualities. I'm normally present for a good hour or two. After that, I am ready for a nice and quiet place to recharge. That being said, I don't usually rush during the Carnival season in the US either. I am way more likely to be photographing the event. I have my shy moments... I'm most comfortable behind the camera, not infront of it.

Still somewhat adventurous, I started attending the Atlanta Junkanoo Group meetings with my older brother slightly before the 2018 Carnival season. My older brother has been my partner in crime for years. If there is an adventure to be had, chances are he's there. And I am close behind. As impulsive as I can be, it's very exciting to have someone to go whitewater rafting, hiking, camping, fishing and road tripping with.

Being the cool one out of the duo, my older brother decided he would rush this year. Meaning he would not only participate in the parade. But also play an instrument while in full costume. As was the tradition. He also performed with the Atlanta Junkanoo Group in the event held competitions. I on the other hand also signed on to walk the parade with my oldest brother, but as a photographer. What can I say, old habits die hard.

When it came down to the big day, we arrived excited and sleepy. My brother and I got little to no sleep, staying up late to further decorate his costume. First of all, let me tell you.. it was HOT! Not any regular Atlanta hot either. It was a beautiful day, with barely a cloud in the sky. It was as if the sky had opened up to ensure all could see. But heat stroke is no joke. Precautions and provisions were made to make sure every participant was adequately hydrated, in addition to having easy access to emergency assistance if needed.

Sweetie, let me tell you something! Celebrating with the Atlanta Dekalb Carnival was amazing. Everyone came to show up and show out, and I loved it. Sometimes being stateside, you feel a bit disconnected from your culture. So getting moments to submerge yourself in it, are not only heartwarming but rewarding. It didn't matter what country the other participants were from, it was just an amazing feeling to be around other 'Islanders' who were just as proud as you were to share their unique and beautiful culture. Ornately decorated, it was evident that many of the costumes took over a year to complete. The dedication to quality and authenticity was evident.

Although I was unable to attend the 2019 Atlanta Dekalb Carnival... I am proud to say that the home team came in 3rd place for Band of the Year - Congratulations to the Atlanta Junkanoo Group!

If you ever get a chance to go, you should. There is a parade, international and local artists, arts and crafts, food, vendors and more. If you go, carry your tings though. Mind your manners and have a great time!
