Should you ever find yourself southwest of Macon and feel like a drive, head towards Lumpkin, Georgia. A little slice of a red clay paradise is waiting for you there.

Providence Canyon State Park. Have you ever heard of it? Maybe Georgia's Little Grand Canyon? Well, it is a sight to be seen. Making up just slightly over 1,000 acres, the park is a beautiful place to visit. I now understand how Providence park earned its place on Georgia's list of Natural Wonders. Pretty in the summer, the park is even more breathtaking in the fall. As the leaves change, and the temperature falls, the park becomes even more magical.

Having lived in Georgia for almost 30 years, I must say I hadn't even heard of Providence until mid-2016. Nor had most of my friends, family or social circle. It's not something you see on most Georgia tourism sites or Welcome Center packets. But, if you need a beautiful view and fresh air, make the trip.

I do suggest you make this an early afternoon or morning trip, as driving home on unfamiliar, unlit and winding back roads can be very dangerous. Also, cellphone reception can be spotty at times. So, make sure that you let people know where you are in the event of an emergency. If you end up going, please let me know what you thought about Georgia's 'little' gem. Also, keep in mind that the park closes slightly before sunset, EST.

Love History? Before heading to the canyon check out to the Lumpkin Historical Society website. You may just find yourself on a road trip with several stops, and wouldn't that be just wonderful!
